End-stage renal disease (ESRD) occurs when the kidneys are no longer able to function at a level that is necessary for day-to-day life. ESRD may be caused by a variety of conditions that can impair kidney function, including diabetes, high blood pressure and other kidney diseases.

Dialysis is a treatment that performs the functions of natural kidneys when the kidneys fail. Dialysis is not a cure for ESRD, but may benefit by helping you to feel better and live longer.

HRMC's dialysis unit offers hemodialysis, or cleaning of the blood, treatments to its patients. In hemodialysis, blood is pumped from your body to an artificial kidney, called a dialyzer. The dialyzer is a filter with semipermeable membranes that allows the removal of toxins and excess fluid from your blood. Purified blood is then returned into your body.

Dialysis is life sustaining with treatments generally occurring three times a week for about 3-4 hours per session.

HRMC's dietician is available to provide you and your primary caregiver information and tips to help optimize quality of life with medications, exercise, diet and fluid intake. Social services can also provide information on financial and emotional programs and will connect you to other community resources.

HRMC welcomes visiting dialysis patients. Visitors should have their home dialysis unit contact HRMC, preferably one month prior to visit.

Early detection of kidney disease is key to managing the disease with the goal of preventing kidney failure and the need for dialysis. KEEP, Kidney Early Evaluation Program, is a free kidney health screening program designed to raise awareness about kidney disease among high risk individuals and provide free testing and educational information, so that kidney disease and its complications can be prevented or delayed.
