HRMC Honors Dr. Paul Hohm
with Scholarship Fund

In recognition of his dedication to health care in the Huron area, HRMC's board of directors has established the Dr. Paul and Carol Hohm Healthcare Scholarship Fund.

The board contributed $100,000 to establish the fund along with a $50,000 challenge match to the community to make scholarship funds available sooner.

Dr. Paul Hohm was born on a farm near Yale and began practicing medicine in Huron in 1946. Dr. Hohm was actively involved in the establishment of St. John Hospital and all subsequent expansions of HRMC. He continued practicing medicine until his death in August 2006.

Interest earned from the newly created endowment will fund scholarships or educational assistance for students pursuing medical degrees in a variety of physician specialties, as well as other healthcare careers such as nursing, pharmacy, psychology, radiology or therapy. Scholarship recipients will commit the first five years of their practice to serving Beadle County.

The scholarship fund will be managed by the HRMC Foundation, and scholarship funds will be distributed once the fund begins earning a minimum of $50,000 interest income per year.

One-time gifts, multi-year pledges or asset contributions will be matched dollar for dollar by the HRMC board of directors up to $50,000. The challenge match will remain open through the end of 2007. Community members interested in contributing to the fund can contact the Foundation executive director, Rob Timm, at 605-353-6315 or contribute online at www.hrmcfoundation.org.

Importance of Prenatal Care
Taking care of your body both before and during pregnancy can help you and your baby get off to a healthy start. Prenatal care is one of the most important things you can do to improve your child's health and decrease the risk of birth defects.

To help you have a healthy baby and pregnancy, avoid alcohol, smoking and drugs; see your doctor for regular checkups; eat a well-balanced diet and exercise moderately. Talk to your physician before changing your diet or starting an exercise routine.

Because parenthood can bring lots of questions, HRMC has created a program called Baby U Maternity Club. Through bi-monthly newsletters, prenatal education classes and one-on-one education, the Baby U program can help expectant parents navigate through the questions and anxiety of pregnancy. For more information, or to join, visit www.huronregional.org/BabyU or call 605-353-6200 or 800-529-0115. Let HRMC baby you and your baby – and even dad, too.

HRMC to Host Cancer Education Booth at Relay for Life on June 8
Relay for Life participants and the public will have the chance to learn their risk for cancer at a health promotions booth provided by Huron Regional Medical Center and the American Cancer Society.

Beadle County's Relay event provides a perfect opportunity to deliver cancer detection and prevention information to people who are there in support of a cure for the disease. Informational displays on breast, colorectal, lung, oral, prostate and skin cancer will educate visitors on the symptoms, risks, recommended screenings and treatment options. Watch for more details closer to the event.
