Dark Chocolate,
a Healthy Treat?
Dark Chocolate, a Healthy Treat?

You've probably heard that green leafy vegetables and a variety of fruits are full of antioxidants, but what about dark chocolate? Theories have circulated for years that dark chocolate offers health benefits, and a recent study has produced evidence to support this concept.*

German researchers found that subjects consuming 30 calories of dark chocolate daily realized lower blood pressure after several weeks. However, the control group enjoying white chocolate experienced no change. Why? Researchers concluded this occurred because dark chocolate contains high amounts of antioxidants, while white chocolate does not. Milk chocolate also scores low comparatively. Previous studies have linked dark chocolate with lowered blood pressure, improved insulin resistance and lower LDL (bad) cholesterol.** Though more research needs to be done, this news is very promising.

Just remember, that's 30 calories, not 300 calories. Chocolate is high in fat and sugar, so overindulging can negate the positive effects of eating dark chocolate. Please consume in moderation.
