A History of Commitment
December 12, 2022
Continuity of care has been a consistent theme during HRMC’s long history, which began with the founding of St. John’s Hospital in 1947. Established by the Franciscan Sisters, the center was built to be a place where patients could see a spectrum of doctors providing different services to the region.
“The medical community was fairly diverse [at that time],” says Robert C. Hohm, MD, internist at the HRMC Physicians Clinic, formerly with Tschetter & Hohm Clinic, which was founded by his father, uncle and great-uncle in 1946. “There were numerous physicians serving a huge population in rural America, where your patients are your neighbors and your friends.”
Fast-forward 75 years and many things have changed, but the mindset of treating patients like friends remains a core belief at HRMC.
In 1978, St. John’s Hospital transitioned to a not-for-profit community corporation, Huron Regional Medical Center Inc. In 2021, Tschetter & Hohm Clinic joined forces with HRMC at the HRMC Physicians Clinic, continuing the evolution of medical excellence delivered in an independent health care setting.
That independent spirit has been responsible for attracting top talent to HRMC, as was the case with Nathan Loewen, MD, FAAFP, family medicine physician and chief of staff at HRMC.
“When I arrived in 1992, I was looking to practice in an environment free from the politics of medicine, ”Dr. Loewen says. “Back then, staff was undergoing change, much like today. I quickly found myself fitting into that environment, which was exciting for a young physician.”
Dr. Loewen helped oversee the expansion of the obstetric department in 2018 and looks forward to the continuation of improvements at HRMC. Both Dr. Hohm and Dr. Loewen see the
75th anniversary as a time to honor the achievements of HRMC, where the future of medicine is bright.
“We’re dedicated to consistent, quality health care and are adaptable to the ever-changing environment that is health care today,” Dr. Loewen says. “This will enable us to continue offering quality
care for our community.”
