April is National Foot Health Awareness Month

National Foot Health Month is observed annually in April to raise awareness about the importance of foot health and to promote good foot care practices. According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, approximately 20 percent of the U.S. population has at least one foot problem annually.

The average person takes nearly 10,000 steps per day, which adds up to three million steps per year, making foot health key to an active life. “Your feet are the foundation of your mobility, and maintaining their health is essential for overall well-being,” says Jordan Finck, DPM, foot and ankle surgeon and podiatrist at the HRMC Physicians Clinic. “Proper foot care helps prevent discomfort, injury, and chronic issues.”

Follow these tips to maintain good foot health:

Hygiene: Wash your feet regularly with warm water and mild soap, ensuring you dry them thoroughly, especially between the toes, to prevent fungal infections. Apply a moisturizer to prevent dry, cracked skin, but avoid the areas between the toes to reduce the risk of fungal growth. Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown nails, and file any sharp edges.

Proper Footwear: Wear well-fitting shoes that provide support and cushion. Avoid shoes that are too tight or high heels for extended periods, as these can lead to blisters, bunions, or other foot problems.

Inspect Regularly: Check your feet for cuts, blisters, or discoloration, especially if you have diabetes. Early detection of issues can prevent complications.

Stay Active: Regular exercise improves circulation, which is vital for foot health. Stretching and strengthening your feet helps to relieve pressure you put on them each day, keeps muscles flexible and helps prevent injuries. A simple exercise like picking up a towel with your toes or toe raises can increase flexibility.

Seek Professional Help: Visit a podiatrist if you experience persistent pain, swelling, or signs of infection.
