Letter to the Editor: Blizzard of Thanks
April 26, 2019
April, once again, brought snow “showers” to our community resulting in school and business closures, event cancellations and residents staying home to weather out the storm. But in the healthcare business, closing isn’t an option – hospitals and medical providers make a commitment to be accessible no matter the hour or the weather – for the sake of our community.
I am sincerely grateful to all the Huron Regional Medical Center staff and medical providers who braved the cold, snow and wind to show up at the hospital, and in many cases, stay overnight, to make sure any member of our community who needed care got it.
For our dialysis patients, that care wouldn’t have been possible were it not for the bravery and dedication of H & S Taxi Service, People’s Transit and the Huron Police department. In the face of dangerous conditions, Henry Hanten, Gail Kludt and Captain Mark Johnson and HRMC Dialysis Director Cathy Perry developed a plan to pick up and deliver dialysis patients and nursing staff so that life-sustaining care could be delivered. Captain Johnson worked with the City of Huron street crews to unearth the People’s Transit bus and clear the way for Transit driver Gary Hansen. Gary then spent the entire day delivering patients, making sure each one got home safely.
I’d also like to thank the Huron Ambulance Service and members of the community who helped to transport patients even though no travel was advised. Thanks also to the HRMC maintenance crew who picked up staff from their homes and brought them to work and kept the entrances of the hospital cleared. And, no one would have been moving anywhere if it weren’t for the dedication of the City of Huron street crews. We are fortunate to live and serve in a community that truly supports one another and does what it takes to lend a helping hand.
I surely hope that spring is finally here to stay – and I’m grateful to know whatever the weather, the HRMC team and our community workers are committed to caring for all who live and work in this place we call home.
With sincere appreciation,
HRMC President & CEO
