Boat Safety: Smooth Sailing
May 23, 2025
Whether you're setting off on a peaceful lake cruise or heading out for a day of fishing on the river, safety should always be your top priority. Here are some essential boat safety tips to help keep your adventures fun and worry-free.
1. Wear a Life Jacket
This one’s a no-brainer. Every person on board should have a properly fitting life jacket—and wear it at all times while on the water. Even strong swimmers can get into trouble, especially in unexpected conditions.
2. Check the Weather
Always look at the forecast before heading out and use your weather app on your cell phone. Sudden storms can make waters dangerous. If the skies look threatening or the winds pick up, it’s better to wait it out or head back to shore.
3. Don't Overload the Boat
Every boat has a weight limit. Overloading can make it unstable, which increases the risk of capsizing. Be mindful of how many people and how much gear you bring aboard.
4. Bring Safety Gear
Besides life jackets, make sure you have a first-aid kit, fire extinguisher, whistle or horn, flashlight, and a throwable flotation device. These tools could save lives in an emergency.
5. Stay Sober
Boating under the influence is just as dangerous—and illegal—as driving under the influence. Stay alert and stay sober so you can react quickly to anything unexpected.
6. Tell Someone Your Plan
Before you go out, let a friend or family member know your boating plans. Tell them where you're going and when you plan to be back. It helps ensure someone knows to look out for you if needed. Bring communication devices like cell phones and store them on a safe place in the boat in case you need to call for help. You can purchase water-proof sleeves to protect technology from moisture.
7. Know the Rules of the Water and Designate Spotters
Boating has rules, just like the road. Learn the basic navigation rules and signals. Knowing who has the right of way can prevent dangerous close calls. Also, be sure you have designated spotters to watch for debris in the water and also to spot and communicate for any passengers enjoying water sports like surfing, wakeboarding, tubing or water skiing.
Boating is a great way to relax and enjoy nature—but it also comes with responsibility. Follow these simple safety tips, and you’ll be better prepared to handle whatever the water throws your way. Stay safe and happy boating!
