HRMC to Launch Three New Apprenticships
November 24, 2024
Huron Regional Medical Center is celebrating National Apprenticeship Week by gearing up to launch three new apprenticeship programs including hemodialysis technician registered nursing, and a health care philanthropy apprenticeship at the HRMC Foundation.
The hemodialysis technician apprenticeship offers the opportunity to earn an income and learn 100% onsite. This one-year program allows apprentices to truly begin from scratch. In the first few weeks apprentices observe veteran employees and learn HRMC protocols, while gradually working toward patient care. The next level of the apprenticeship concurrently teaches 12 modules of hemodialysis curriculum and patient care skills. Apprenticeships rotate classroom and floor training four days a week fro the duration of the program. Upon completion of all skill checkoffs, passing module exams and obtaining certification, apprentices graduate from the program and are certified hemodialysis technicians.
The second new apprenticeship in registered nursing has two intended pathways, one for a more traditional nursing student and one designed to assist our community's international nurses.
For the nontraditional approach, the apprenticeship focuses on our community's diverse populations who already have a health care background. For this group, apprentices are reacquainted with medical terminology in a course that is specifically designed for English language learners. The apprenticeship couples medical language with an NCLEX review course, and face to face discussion in a peer setting. HRMC's goal is to give apprentices the opportunity to observe and practice skills, master the English language, and gain hands-on experience, When apprentices receive licensure, they will practice and refine skills in a variety of nursing settings, rotating through three to five nursing departments for two-to-four week stints.
The traditional pathway for HRMC's registered nursing apprenticeship entails enrolling in and completing an accredited nursing program, while shadowing, and receiving on-the-job training a few days a week, once the apprentice passes boards, they will rotate through three to five nursing departments for two-to-four weeks, giving them additional on-the-job training in a variety of nursing settings.
HRMC's third new apprenticeship is a unique combination of marketing and health care philanthropy that is housed in HRMC's Foundation. Apprentices can take traditional college courses, or complete 100% of their training in house iwht educaiton provided from Coursera. The apprenticeship will focus on five key areas and provide paid on-the-job training for office management, QuickBooks accounting software, donor relations, online and print marketing and event planning. Apprentices receive orientation, learn alongside veteran employees, and complete supplemental online courses in this one-year program.
These three new apprenticeships will complement the five existing apprenticeship programs that are currently offered at HRMC: youth certified nursing assistant, surgical technology, respiratory therapy, licensed practical nursing and informational technology.
