Loving Care for Difficult Moments
December 21, 2023
BRENDA CHRISTIANSEN WAS very close to her 92-yearold mother, Catherine Johnson, who moved to Huron in early 2022 from southern Illinois. During their days together, the pair enjoyed each other’s company and daily trips to get ice cream. However, their lives changed forever when Johnson had a serious stroke.
Knowing that Christiansen’s mother would need signifi cant end-of-life care, the medical team at Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC) introduced Christiansen to hospice services.
“Hospice provides quality medical care, pain and symptom management, and emotional and spiritual support,” says Karen Decker, community hospice bereavement coordinator at HRMC. “Hospice offers comfort and dignity through the end-of-life and concentrates on the person, not the disease.”
For Christiansen, the care allowed her to keep her mother at home and be near her in her final moments.
“Hospice was my salvation,” Christiansen says. “They helped me stay strong for mom. They will help and support you and make a difficult time not so difficult.”
