Planning for the Big Day: How a Birth Plan Empowers Your Labor Experience
July 22, 2025
Welcoming a new baby into the world is one of life’s most extraordinary moments. At Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC), we believe that every birthing experience should be as personal, respectful, and comfortable as possible. That’s why we encourage all expecting parents to complete a Birth Plan/Request—a thoughtful guide designed to communicate your preferences and priorities during labor, delivery, and newborn care.
A birth plan is more than just a checklist. It’s a voice for your values, a way to share your hopes, and a tool to help your care team honor your choices. Whether you envision soothing music and dimmed lights or prefer natural methods of pain relief like massage, positioning, or water therapy, this plan puts you in the center of your care.
The form includes everything from:
-
Your preferred delivery method and location
-
Pain relief preferences—from acupressure and birthing balls to epidurals
-
Infant feeding plans like exclusive breastfeeding or combination feeding
-
Decisions about cord cutting, newborn procedures, and even car seat readiness
Even more importantly, it respects the unique choices of families—including those preparing for adoption, surrogate births, or specific cultural practices. You can specify if you'd like minimal interventions, reduced monitoring, no separation from your baby, or a quiet birthing environment.
No two births are the same, and your plan may evolve as labor progresses. But having your wishes in writing empowers you to be an active part of your care, supported by a team that listens.
To help prepare for your journey, we also invite you to attend one of our free prenatal education classes—a great way to build confidence, learn what to expect, and connect with other expecting parents. Register here.
Have you already taken a class with us? We’d love your feedback! Please take our short prenatal class survey to help us improve the experience for other growing families.
If you're expecting, talk with your provider about completing a Birth Plan/Request form at your next visit. It's one more way HRMC helps you feel prepared, supported, and confident as you bring new life into the world—your way.
