We’ve Got You Covered

Every October, millions of Americans dress in pink in honor and remembrance of those who are battling breast cancer, those who have survived and those who have lost their lives. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an important reminder of the battle that 1 in 8 women will face in her lifetime.
Early detection is key and a three-fold approach is the best way to detect breast cancer early. The timing of each of these activities is important.
- Self-breast exams should be completed monthly about the same time each month and not while you are menstruating as your breasts tend to be lumpier during this time of the month. A helpful reminder to perform the self-breast exam is the day you receive your utility bill or another monthly bill. The purpose of the self-breast exam is to become familiar with your breasts; as chances are, you may find a new lump or change in your breasts before a physician would.
- Clinical-breast exams should be done every year during your annual checkup. This exam with your physician should be completed around the same time each year.
- Once you have turned 40, yearly mammograms are recommended. It’s important to schedule a mammogram about the same time each year, so if a lump does appear or grows, you will know if it has just developed or has grown bigger within the last year.
Each year, Huron Regional Medical Center performs nearly 1,700 mammograms. Unfortunately, there are more women in the community who need to have a mammogram completed, but either can’t afford it, don’t have time or need a little encouragement to make the call.
This year HRMC, with the support of donations through the HRMC Foundation, is helping to take away the excuses. Through the month of October, HRMC is offering a new program called “We’ve Got You Covered.”
The goal of “We’ve Got You Covered” is to increase awareness about the importance of breast cancer screening and remove barriers stopping women from getting recommended screenings.
Any woman who has not had a mammogram in the last two years, who is between the ages of 40 and 64, who does not have insurance or whose insurance will not cover a mammogram, is eligible for a free mammogram at HRMC. HRMC staff will help to determine if your insurance or another program will cover the costs of a mammogram or if you are eligible for a free mammogram. If you’re not sure if your covered, our team will even call your insurance company for you!
To help remove the ‘no time’ excuse, HRMC is offering flexible hours in October. Early mornings, late afternoons and even Saturdays are all options to make your mammogram appointment at HRMC.
If you are nervous about getting a mammogram, our staff will take the time to walk you through the process to help resolve any concerns. It’s also a good idea to bring a friend – make it an annual day for the girls!
We’ve Got You Covered makes it even easier to get a mammogram during the month of October in Huron! All you have to do is pick up the phone and call (605) 353-6214. You can also find more information at www.huronregional.org/mammo.
Rest easier knowing you’re covered by HRMC!
