    CNA Apprenticeship 

    (high school students)

    Are you interested in exploring the world of healthcare? Would you like to gain college and high school credits while earning your CNA with no cost to you? Earn while you learn with HRMC and Southeast Tech!

    Requirements to participate: satisfactory completion of HRMC's nurse aid training and orientation program as well as the Department of Labor's 'Bring You 'A' Game training.

    LPN Apprenticeship

    The LPN Apprentice communicates with and on behalf of the client and coordinates client care with all health team members.

    Minimum Certification/License Requirements: student or graduate of an accredited school of nursing; eligible or currently licensed as a professional nurse in the State of South Dakota.

    Respiratory Therapy Apprenticeship 

    Get on-the-job training within the clinical respiratory and cardiopulmonary departments, working with internal department staff. You'll be responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the needs of each patient. Under the guidance of staff, you'll administer respiratory therapy and perform procedures including but not limited to, cardiac stress testing, ECG's, holter monitoring and pulmonary function testing.

    You'll also consult with physicians concerning the effects of treatment modalities and equipment.

    As a requirement, you must be enrolled into an accredited respiratory therapy program or have a license in practical nursing.

    HRMC Foundation Scholarships

    Ensuring that Huron continues to have the needed medical professionals is a top priority, and our donors have generously supported the creation of multiple scholarship programs to help people achieve their dreams.

    The purpose of the HRMC Foundation scholarship program is to provide financial support to individuals who are pursuing a career in a healthcare-related field while ensuring that the Huron area continues to have high-quality, dedicated healthcare staff.

    There are three scholarships available each year, which include:

    Scrubs Camp & Camp Med

    (high school students)

    HRMC assists Northeast SD AHEC with our area Scrubs Camp and Camp Med.

    Camp Med is an activity that presents middle school students with a variety of health careers through hands-on experiences. 

    Hospital Tours
    (all ages)

    HRMC offers tours for organizations and people of all ages. It also offers tours and activities for elementary students. This program is designed to promote career awareness, provide fun hands-on activities and decrease children's anxiety about hospitals. Tours scheduled upon request.     Health Careers Exploration Academy

    (high school grades 10-12)

    The Health Careers Exploration Academy is an experience that provides an excellent opportunity for high school students (grades 10-12) to explore different careers in health care under the guidance of healthcare professionals. Students spend the day observing and learning about the different career opportunities available at HRMC. In addition to a tour of HRMC, students engage in hands-on activities in the following career areas:

    • Laboratory
    • Nursing
    • Radiology
    • Physical, occupational and speech therapy
    • Medical coding
    • Surgery
    • Dietetics
    • Respiratory therapy

    Students also learn about scholarship offerings available through the HRMC Foundation Healthy Huron scholarship program which provide generous financial support for a variety of high-need health careers to students who are willing to return to work in the Huron area.     Job Shadowing
    (high school juniors and seniors and adults)

    This opportunity is for high school juniors and seniors and adults to receive valuable information about various healthcare opportunities as they interact with healthcare professionals at the hospital. To discuss job shadow opportunities, please contact Teresa Haatvedt, workforce recruiter, at thaatvedt@huronregional.org or by calling (605) 353-6589. Prior to your scheduled job shadow visit, you will need to complete a privacy, medical history and confidentiality forms and a job shadow/observation agreement.  

    Clinical Enrichment Program (CEP)
    (nursing students enrolled in their final year of an accredited nursing program)

    The HRMC Clinical Enrichment Program (CEP) offers nursing students in their last year of school the opportunity to apply the knowledge they’ve gained in hands-on clinical experiences. This program is designed to assist students financially, and provide a community hospital experience that helps students build confidence along with critical thinking, prioritizing and time management skills in a supportive and nurturing hospital environment. 

    This six-week program provides 160 hours of direct patient care, mentored by an experienced nurse throughout each shift to learn about the care and services provided throughout a typical day, as well as observation in two specialty care areas and the opportunity to work on an evidenced-based project team.

    To apply for the program, the student will need to provide documentation of the following eligibility criteria AND complete a job application:

    • Proof of enrollment in final year of accredited nursing program
    • Documentation of an cumulative grade point average of 2.8 or higher
    • Proof of your skills from nursing program
    • Two letters of reference, one of which needs to be from a nursing instructor
    • One-page essay on your expectations of the internship experience

    HOSA - Health Occupation Students of America

    (high school students)
    HOSA, Health Occupation Students of America, has reestablished the Huron community chapter consisting of high school students from Huron High School and James Valley Christian High School.  The mission of HOSA is to enhance the delivery of compassionate, quality health care by providing opportunities for knowledge, skill and leadership development of all health science education students, therefore, helping the student meet the needs of the health care community.  HOSA allows students to grow their knowledge base in the many health care roles essential to support the ongoing shortage of workers at the local, state and national levels.

    Chapter advisors are Teresa Haatvedt, HRMC Healthcare Career Development Specialist and Rebekah Storm, NP at HRMC Physicians Clinic, Huron.  Other local HOSA high school chapters include Iroquois and Wolsey-Wessington.
