Breast Cancer Awareness Events in October
September 19, 2025
Huron Regional Medical Center and the HRMC Foundation partner with several groups in the community during the month of October to raise awareness and encourage women to schedule a mammogram in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The average risk of a woman in the United States developing breast cancer in her lifetime is about 13% according to the American Cancer Society, who also estimate that over 316,950 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in 2025 alone.
Many women with breast cancer show no symptoms, which is why breast cancer screening is so important. When breast cancer is detected early, and is in the localized stage, the 5-year relative survival rate is 99%, also according to the American Cancer Society.
The gold-standard for breast cancer screening is a 3D mammogram, which is a low-risk and non-invasive exam available at HRMC. Most mammogram appointments take less than 20 minutes.
Thanks to the generous donations of area residents to the HRMC Foundation, the HRMC is able to offer free mammograms and other women’s cancer screenings to women in need. Women between the ages of 40-64 or under the age of 40 with an increased risk who have not had a mammogram in one year and do not have insurance that covers a mammogram are eligible to receive a free 3D mammogram screening.
The community is invited to join in the fight against breast cancer in supporting early detection. Upcoming events include:
- October 8, 4:00-8:00 p.m., Runnings Annual Ladies’ Night Out
- October 10, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Olympic Motors 1-Mile Walk for Breast Cancer
- October 14, Huron High School Pink Out Volleyball Match vs. Sioux Falls Roosevelt
Funds raised will benefit the HRMC Foundation’s We’ve Got You Covered program. Register for the walk, purchase a volleyball t-shirt or bid on silent auction items at hrmcfoundation.org.
