August 22, 2016
Huron, S.D. – Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC) honored its August Exceptional Employee of the Month, Janice Christensen, RN, with a reception on Wednesday, August 10, 2016.
Christensen, who has worked as a nurse in HRMC’s home health department for more than nine years and currently serves as a patient care manager, was nominated by coworkers to receive the honor. According to nominating coworkers, “Janice is always the first one to volunteer for a project.”
“When something comes up unexpectedly, Janice handles it with a smile and willingly digs in to do what is necessary,” the nominaton continued. “Having worked as a nursing instructor, Janice does an excellent job teaching patients all they need to know about their illness.”
HRMC’s Exceptional Employee of the Month award recognizes an employee who goes above and beyond to exceed expectations. Employees can be nominated by other employees or by a patient or visitor who witnesses exceptional service. A committee of employees from various hospital departments chooses the employee on a monthly basis and an Exceptional Employee of the Year is chosen at year-end from the 12 monthly honorees.
As August exceptional employee, Christensen received a reception with friends and coworkers, a meal certificate to a local restaurant, a professional photo session and portrait, $50, a lapel pin and a special parking place for a month.
Christensen holds a nursing diploma from Methodist School of Nursing in Mitchell, South Dakota. She earned a bachelor of science in nursing from Si Tanka University in Huron and a masters of nursing education from the University of Phoenix online.
Prior to joining HRMC, Christensen worked in community health and home care with the South Dakota Department of Health. She has also taught nursing and led clinical instruction in Huron through Si Tanka University, Dakota Wesleyan University and Lake Area Technical Institute.
She has three grown children and eight grandsons and one granddaughter ranging in age from five months to 12 years. “My grandchildren make ‘Mima’ proud and I love to spend as much time as possible with them,” said Christensen. “They challenge me to stay young!” Christensen also enjoys travelling, reading and volunteering in her spare time.
