Community Invited to Name Orthopedic Robot at HRMC

Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC) invites the community to help them name the newest addition to the orthopedic surgery team, Mako the robot.
HRMC is now using Mako,
a SmartRobotics system,
for total knee and hip replacements.
HRMC employees devised a list of potential monikers for Mako, which were narrowed down by the surgical team. Now, they’re asking for input from the community in choosing the robot’s final
name. Choices include Maverick, R2Knee2, Rosie, Optimus and Hawkeye. Voting is open through midnight on Tuesday, October 17. The online link to vote can be found at https://www.huronregional.org/orthopedics and by scanning the QR code below.
Mako, a SmartRobotics system, is utilized for robotic assisted knee and hip replacements. Before the joint replacement surgery, a CT scan generates a 3D model of the joint anatomy, which is then used to help the surgeon personalize and plan the surgical approach of the knee or hip replacement.
The robot does not operate on its own or move unless the surgeon prompts it to do so. Optical trackers and cameras are utilized for the surgeon to have an exact awareness of where the hip or knee is during the surgery.
Todd Anderson, MD, and Kevin Hofer, MD, orthopedic surgeons, are certified in Mako SmartRobotics and utilize the robotics system for total knee and hip replacements. The hospital says the procedures are just like traditional hip and knee surgeries, but the robotic technology allows doctors to get a more precise implant, which allows for greater comfort and experience after the procedure.
