Dr. Elyse Brock Earns Board Certification
February 22, 2018
Huron, S.D. – Elyse Brock, MD, a local obstetrician and gynecologist (OB/GYN), is now board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
To become board certified, Dr. Brock completed a rigorous oral exam, which included a review of her practice – including all procedures, surgeries and deliveries – over a one-year period to ensure that she is providing evidence-based, high-quality care.
All OB/GYN specialists earn their undergraduate college degree and complete an additional four years of medical school. After receiving their medical degree, OB/GYNs also complete four years of residency training in the specialty, after which they take a written exam to become board qualified and obtain a license to practice. Following this, some physicians elect to become board certified, though it is not required for practicing the specialty.
“Board certification is voluntary, but something that I felt strongly about achieving to benefit my patients,” explained Dr. Brock. “Prior to sitting for my oral boards, I had all of the training and licensure required to practice as an OB/GYN. However, becoming board certified means that I will be held to a higher standard in the future when it comes to continuing education – both in terms of knowledge and skills.”
A native of Huron, Dr. Brock practices with Dr. Sara Castellanos, who is also a board-certified OB/GYN at the Women’s Wellness Center, located at 142 Third Street SE. Dr. Brock also sees patients at Horizon Healthcare as an outreach to meet the needs of patients there on a sliding-fee schedule. As an OB/GYN specialist, she provides a wide range of services, including well-women exams, preconception counseling, prenatal care, vaginal and cesarean deliveries, post-partum care, infertility treatment and procedures such as hysterectomy and endometrial ablation. She also has specialized training in gynecologic and early obstetric ultrasound.
“Even though OB/GYN is a specialty, the continuity of care that we are able to provide our patients is very similar to primary care. I enjoy building relationships with the women I care for and helping them make the best decisions for themselves,” said Dr. Brock. “My ultimate goal is that no woman in the area suffers unnecessarily with female health issues because she either doesn’t know that help is available – or, that help is available right here in Huron!”
Dr. Brock earned a bachelor of arts degree with majors in both biology and family studies and a minor in biomedical sciences from St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, in 2008. She received her medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis, MN, in 2012. She completed her OB/GYN residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, IA, in 2016.
Dr. Brock is a member of the American Medical Association, the South Dakota Medical Association and the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology, where she currently serves as South Dakota’s Junior Fellow Vice-Chair and attends state, district and national meetings to advocate for women’s health legislation. She also serves as Huron Regional Medical Center’s physician representative on the United Way Heartland Region board of directors.
She and her husband, Troy, live in Huron with their three children: Oliver, age 8, Evelyn, age 6, and Leo, age 2. They are expecting their fourth child in June. In her spare time, Dr. Brock enjoys reading, watching movies, spending time outside with her family and restoring the home that they purchased in Huron’s Historic District.
