Dr. Tony Loewen Prepares to Return to Huron in Summer 2020
December 02, 2019
HURON, SD – Huron native Tony Loewen, MD, is completing the last six months of a general surgery residency in Denver, Colorado, in preparation to return to his hometown next summer and provide surgical services.
Dr. Loewen graduated from James Valley Christian School in 2005 and is the son of Dr. Nathan (Rosette) Loewen, who has worked as a family medicine with obstetrics physician in Huron since 1992.
“Growing up in Huron was a positive experience for me and the sense of community here is really why I wanted to come back,” said Dr. Loewen. “I have always liked to use my hands to help people and I especially enjoy the instant gratification of being able to help someone who is sick or in dire straits physically with my hands through surgery.”
He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in pre-medical biochemistry from Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas, and earned a Doctor of Medicine from the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine.
Prior to starting medical school, Dr. Loewen worked in the emergency department at HRMC. He signed a recruitment agreement with the hospital which provides financial support during medical school and residency, plus will pay his medical school loans through a five-year work commitment in Huron.
“I’m excited Tony has chosen to commit to returning to Huron and practice rural medicine,” said David Dick, HRMC president & CEO. “I’ve enjoyed getting to know Tony and his family and look forward to having another Dr. Loewen join our medical staff to care for our community for years to come.”
Dr. Loewen is one of four recruits who will return to Huron to practice over the next several years. Dr. Rebecca Runge, who grew up in Wessington and is in the first year of her internal medicine residency in Sioux Falls and plans to return to Huron in 2022; Dr. Kevin Hofer, who is in his second year of orthopedic residency in Wichita, Kansas and plans to return to practice in Huron in 2023; and Cole VanBockern, an Arlington native, who just began medical school in Des Moines, Iowa, and plans to practice family medicine in Huron after medical school and residency.
