HOSA, Health Occupation Students of America, has reestablished the Huron community chapter consisting of high school students from Huron High School and James Valley Christian High School. The mission of HOSA is to enhance the delivery of compassionate, quality health care by providing opportunities for knowledge, skill and leadership development of all health science education students, therefore, helping the student meet the needs of the health care community. HOSA allows students to grow their knowledge base in the many health care roles essential to support the ongoing shortage of workers at the local, state and national levels.
The Huron Chapter has approximately 30 members participating this fall and will have an opportunity to participate in the SD HOSA state conference this spring. Students will have the ability to take part in a vast array of competitions including emergency preparedness, health (nursing, dentistry, nutrition, veterinary, pharmacology and more), leadership and teamwork events. Each competitor can earn scholarships toward their future education.
South Dakota HOSA was established in 2012 as an initiative of the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine and the South Dakota Area Health Education Center in response to the great need for future health professionals in our state. The goals of South Dakota HOSA are three-fold:
- ENVISION: Expanding and nurturing students' awareness of all the healthcare careers available to them, while molding them into South Dakota's future health professionals.
- ENERGIZE: Becoming proactive in helping counselors develop a robust personal learning plan for students interested in becoming a future health professional. (i.e. education, shadowing, and service)
