HOSA Fall Leadership Launch Academy Held in Huron

Nearly 80 students from the Central Chapter of Health Occupation Students of America-Future Health Professionals (HOSA) recently attended the Fall Leadership Launch Academy in Huron. The event was held at Huron Community Campus on Monday, November 7 with east and west chapter events held in Rapid City and Vermillion.
“We’re thrilled to hold the Fall Academy event in Huron and thankful to our community that continues to show support for the students involved,” remarked Teresa Haatvedt, RN, BSN, healthcare career development specialist at HRMC and HOSA co-advisor of the Huron Chapter. “HOSA provides unique opportunities for leadership development, motivation and recognition for students interested in health care careers.”
Several local organizations sponsored the event, including Greater Huron Development Corporation (GHDC) and the HRMC Foundation. “One of GHDC’s primary focus areas is workforce development. Bringing young people interested in health care careers to Huron helps us create a connection between local employers and prospective future employees,” explained Ted Header, president and CEO for GHDC. “Supporting HOSA is a great investment in today’s youth who will become the leaders of tomorrow.”
Throughout the day-long event, students participated in leadership development activities with Charlotte Henley, Charlotte Henley Speaks, as well as hands-on skill workshops, led by clinical professionals from Huron Regional Medical Center, Dakota Family Dentistry, Horizon Health Care and Southeast Technical College. Clinical skills learned will be utilized in competition at the HOSA State Convention, to be held March 30-31 in Sioux Falls.
Brock Rops, deputy director for the South Dakota Area Health Education Center and executive director for South Dakota HOSA attended the event in Huron. “The Fall Academy builds energy and momentum for the upcoming year while teaching leadership, collaboration and team building,” stated Rops. “HOSA aims to nourish and encourage high school students in their interest in health care careers.”
HOSA was established in 1976 and is recognized by the US Department of Education as a career and technical student organization. South Dakota HOSA was established in 2012. The Huron Chapter was chartered in 2018 and is led by Haatvedt and Rebekah Storm, DNP. Iroquois and Wolsey-Wessington also have active HOSA chapters.
