HRMC Celebrates Volunteers
April 14, 2023
It is National Volunteer Week and Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC) is celebrating in appreciation of the many individuals who selflessly give of their time and energy to help the hospital care for the people of this region.
National Volunteer Week was established in 1974 as an annual celebration focusing on the impact and power of volunteerism and service as an integral aspect of our civic leadership. At HRMC, volunteers serve through the Auxiliary and hospice program.
Hospice volunteers assist with various activities, including office work, assisting with special events, providing companionship in hospice patients’ homes, helping with household chores and providing caregiver relief.
Auxiliary volunteers provide comfort and compassion to patients and visitors they encounter at the information desks and waiting areas. Volunteers often escort patients to other areas within the hospital, answer questions and deliver flowers and newspapers to patient rooms. The mission of the HRMC Auxiliary is to promote and advance the welfare of HRMC by serving patients and assisting with and contributing to charitable projects.
HRMC Auxiliary volunteer, Dianne Groper, began volunteering at the HRMC main lobby desk in December 2022. With a history of volunteering for organizations and events in the community, she felt compelled to help. “Volunteering at HRMC had been in the back of my mind since retirement. After some helpful encouragement, I decided to sign up and it’s been a great decision,” says Groper. “Volunteering here has brought out a part of my personality I haven’t had the opportunity to use before,” she continued, “I get to visit with people and interact with them. I feel like this is where I need to be.”
Volunteers are at the heart of HRMC’s core values of being helpful, accessible and knowledgeable in their support of the health of the community. Additional volunteers are currently needed in a variety of roles and both men and women are invited and encouraged to share their time and talents.
