HRMC Community Hospice to Host Conversation Starter Event
June 17, 2016
Huron, S.D. – To encourage area residents to talk with loved ones about end-of-life issues, HRMC Community Hospice is hosting a “Conversation Starter” Event, Thursday, June 23, at 7 p.m. in the HRMC Legacy Plaza Auditorium.
Lori Hintz, a licensed registered nurse with experience in both hospital and nursing home environments, will be the key presenter. Hintz serves as project manager for the South Dakota Foundation for Medical Care’s nursing home project. She also serves on the SD Culture Change Coalition, SD Dementia Coalition and is a state co-convener for the Advancing Excellence National Campaign for Nursing Home Excellence.
“The Conversation Project is a national campaign dedicated to helping people talk about their wishes for end-of-life care — and to transforming our culture by bringing discussions about dying out in the open,” explains Hintz. “The goal is to make it easier to initiate conversations about dying, and to encourage people to talk now, and as often as necessary, so that their wishes are known when the time comes.
Consider these facts:
- 90 percent of people say that talking to their loved ones about end of life care issues is important; but only 27 percent report they have actually done so.
- 82 percent say it is important to put their wishes in writing but only 23 percent have done so.
- Why are these conversations avoided? Because it is hard!
“It is not easy to talk about how we want the end of our lives to be. But it’s really one of the most important conversations we can have with our loved ones,” said Hintz. “It is really more than just filling out an Advance Directive or medical forms; it begins with having a conversation on values and focusing on what matters to you, not what is the matter with you.”
Hintz encourages everyone to not wait for someone else to start “the conversation”, that may never happen. “We can help to start these conversations today!”
The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact HRMC Community Hospice at 605-353-6520. For more information about the Conversation Starter project, visit www.theconversationproject.org.
