HRMC Dialysis Expansion Project on Track

A renovation project to expand local access to dialysis is on track to be finished by early summer. Upon completion, Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC) dialysis services will relocate to the renovated space at 142 Third Street SE.
The $2.45 million project will provide a convenient, single-level entrance for dialysis patients, who currently receive treatment in the Central Towers building on the HRMC campus, which requires navigating stairs or a ramp for entry. Dialysis patients receive treatment three times per week, with each session generally lasting three to four hours each.
The renovated center will also provide more local access to the vital service by adding five additional treatment stations, increasing the capacity for HRMC dialysis services to treat 36 patients per week, up from the current capacity of 21 patients per week.
Dialysis is a life-saving treatment for people with damaged kidneys. During the dialysis process, a machine takes over the responsibility of filtering waste from the blood, requiring specialized technology and a sophisticated water system.
Installation of the water system and electrical generator as well as completion of final electrical wiring, interior paint and finishes remain. The structural and mechanical portions of the project are largely complete.
To support the availability of the vital service, a special capital campaign committee of the HRMC Foundation has committed to raise funds to support the project. HRMC Foundation executive director, Levi Kary, expressed his gratitude for the support of the project, “It is imperative that we keep this service available locally,” says Kary. “Our friends and neighbors are doing what they always do here – stepping up to help. The generosity of the community is truly impressive.”
