HRMC Dialysis Expansion Project Progresses

In order to expand local access to dialysis services, Huron Regional Medical Center will relocate HRMC dialysis to 142 Third Street SE, which is currently under renovation.
The $2.45 million project kicked off in December, with completion anticipated this summer. Mechanical and electrical work as well as interior framing is complete with final sheetrock and water system piping to be concluded prior to finish work and installation of the dialysis treatment system.
HRMC director of dialysis, Jennifer Jungemann, is thrilled to see the progress toward completion, “It has been very exciting for myself and the dialysis staff to see the development of the space in such a short time,” says Jungemann. “We’re looking forward to inviting patients into the larger, more accessible space.”
The renovated unit will house twelve treatment chairs, increasing the capacity for providing the service locally as the current unit houses seven chairs. The new unit will also feature a water system with an automatic backup to ensure that dialysis can continue locally if part of the system fails. If the current system fails, dialysis patients must travel out of town for treatments until repairs are made.
Joel Fischer, who has undergone dialysis treatments at HRMC for over eight years is thankful to be able to receive treatment right here in Huron, “About a year and a half ago, we had some water problems with the unit. Some of us had to go out of town for treatment. Situations like that really make you appreciate having dialysis available here in Huron,” says Fischer.
During dialysis, a machine takes over the responsibility of filtering waste from the blood, which is a life-saving treatment for people with damaged kidneys. Those living with kidney disease are at risk for serious complications including heart disease, damage to the central nervous system and an increased risk of infection due to compromised immune function.
To ensure the availability of dialysis, a special capital campaign committee of the HRMC Foundation has committed to raise $2.45 million to support the project.
