HURON, S.D. – Local blood donors were celebrated on Tuesday, June14, at Huron Regional Medical Center’s annual donor recognition luncheon.
HRMC honored a total of 39 donors who, in their lifetimes, have donated between 3 and 20 gallons of blood, at the luncheon which coincided with World Blood Donor Day. Since each donor can only donate one pint of blood every 56 days (or six times per year), it takes a donor approximately four years of continuous donations to achieve the three-gallon threshold. HRMC blood donors are publicly recognized once they reach this minimum threshold and every gallon thereafter at the annual luncheon as well as on a recognition board located near the emergency room entrance just outside the main laboratory.
After the donors enjoyed a complimentary lunch of filet mignon, twice baked potato, sugar snap peas and for dessert prepared by HRMC food service staff, several HRMC leaders personally thanked them for their life-saving gifts.
“It is such a tremendous resource for a community our size to have a devoted pool of donors and be able to manage our own blood donation program,” said Dr. Karl Blessinger, HRMC pathologist and medical director of the blood bank. “It is so nice to know who our donors are and it gives a measure of patient safety knowing where our blood comes from. It’s also great to know in the case of an emergency, we have access to a good local supply of blood.”
HRMC’s blood bank meets rigid accreditation standards required by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) and the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA).
“National Blood Donor day honors the birthdate of Karl Landsteiner, who developed the modern system of classification of blood groups,’” said Owen Bain, director of HRMC’s laboratory. “In his and your honor, we celebrate all of you today for sharing life by giving blood. Thank you!”
Donors age 17 and older can donate up to one pint of blood every 56 days. The process is simple, confidential and takes about a half an hour. Community members interested in donating blood can call 353-6530 to schedule an appointment. For convenience, appointments are available Monday through Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Information about donating blood is posted on HRMC’s website at www.huronregional.org.
