HRMC Honors Sydow as December Exceptional Employee
December 17, 2018
Huron, S.D. – Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC) honored its December Exceptional Employee of the Month, Brooke Sydow, EdD, with a reception on Wednesday, December 12, 2018.
Sydow, who started working at HRMC in June of 2017 as a workforce and program developer, was nominated by coworkers to receive the honor. According to nominating coworkers, “Brooke is a shining example of someone who cares and is committed to our community and the health of everyone in it!”
“Her gifts are amazing – she has been one of the most instrumental team members in bringing a nursing school back to the Huron community,” the nomination continued. “Brooke motivates us and is respected by all. She is a friend and valued employee!”
In her role, Sydow assists HRMC staff in a variety of areas. Some of her areas of focus include student and workforce recruitment and retention, local nursing education opportunities and diversity integration. Sydow has worked continuously to secure a partnership through Southeast Technical Institute, and many community partners, to bring back a nursing school to Huron. Most recently, Sydow has been working to receive grant funds that will help HRMC coordinate English as a Second Language (ESL) Training in Healthcare and a Registered Apprenticeship in Nursing.
HRMC’s Exceptional Employee of the Month award recognizes an employee who goes above and beyond to exceed expectations. Employees can be nominated by other employees or by a patient or visitor who witnesses exceptional service. A committee of employees from various hospital departments chooses the employee on a monthly basis and an Exceptional Employee of the Year is chosen at year-end from the 12 monthly honorees.
As December exceptional employee, Sydow received a reception with family, friends and coworkers, a meal certificate to a local restaurant, a professional photo session and portrait, $50, a lapel pin and a special parking place for a month.
Sydow holds a bachelor and master’s degree in communication studies from South Dakota State University (SDSU), as well as a Doctor of Education and Administration from the University of South Dakota. She also earned a secondary teaching certification from Lone Star College in Houston, TX, and a master’s certificate for online instruction from SDSU.
Prior to joining the HRMC Foundation, Sydow worked as the workforce development coordinator for Greater Huron Development Corporation and taught adjunct for Northern State University at the Huron Community Campus. Before relocating to Huron in 2014, Sydow was an instructor, advisor and special projects coordinator for SDSU.
When not working toward the health of our community with HRMC, Sydow enjoys spending time with her husband, John, who is an electric operations supervisor for NorthWestern Energy, her six-year-old daughter, Summer, and two dogs, Nova and Remi. In her spare time, she enjoys teaching personal and group training classes at Anytime Fitness, camping and traveling, taking photographs and spending time with her whole family.
