HRMC Invites You to Go Red for Heart Month
February 12, 2016
HURON, SD – To celebrate American Heart month, Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC) is encouraging the community to “Go Red” and get the facts and protect themselves from the crippling effects of a heart attack or stroke.
One of every three deaths in the U.S. in 2013 were from heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases, while heart disease and stroke were the No. 1 and No. 2 killers worldwide, according to American Heart Association’s 2016 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics Update. In the U.S. the data showed:
- cardiovascular diseases claimed 801,000 lives;
- heart disease killed more than 370,000 people;
- stroke killed nearly 129,000 people;
- about 116,000 of the 750,000 people in the U.S. who had a heart attack died;
- about 795,000 people had a stroke, the leading preventable cause of disability;
A heart attack occurs when the blood supply to part of the heart muscle (the myocardium) is severely reduced or stopped because one or more of the heart’s arteries is blocked. If the blood supply is cut off for more than a few minutes, heart muscle cells suffer permanent injury or die. This can kill or disable someone, depending on how much heart muscle is damaged.
The best protection against heart attack is to arm yourself with information about your risks, the signs and symptoms of heart disease and steps you can take to reduce your risk. HRMC is hosting a Go Red for Your Heart luncheon to help the community better understand heart disease and seek treatment if they are at risk. Dr. Kelly Steffen, a visiting cardiologist with Sanford Heart, will present “Living with Heart Disease,” on Tuesday, February 23, 12:00-1:00 p.m., HRMC Legacy Plaza Auditorium. The event is free and lunch will be provided by Sanford Heart. Men and women are encouraged to wear red, grab a friend and learn your risks for heart disease. Please RSVP to 353-6214 or online at www.huronregional.org/GoRed.
Throughout the month of February, HRMC is also posting heart health information on the hospital’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/huronregionalmedicalcenter. On February 5, many HRMC staff and providers wore red in support of heart disease prevention. Check out the pictures on Facebook and feel free to post your own photos. More information about American Heart month and how to recognize and reduce risk factors for heart disease is available online at www.americanheart.org or by calling 1-800-AHA-USA1.
