Huron, S.D. – Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC) celebrated National Nurses’ Day on Tuesday, May 7, with a variety of treats and activities to honor the dedication of those who give so much of themselves to care for the Huron community.
This year’s National Nurses Week theme is “4 Million Reasons to Celebrate,” focusing on the nurses ‘sheer number and the innumerable ways nurses influence the profession and all aspects of health care.
In a short presentation, Gail Robeson, RN, BSN, vice president of patient services for HRMC, thanked the entire nursing team for their impact on the patient experience. “Your words of encouragement and your caring acts of kindness reach the hearts and lift the spirits of those you serve.
“You help others who are suffering from all kinds of physical and mental distress. You calm and reassure in addition to providing care,” said Robeson. “Nursing is a profession which requires a real passion for serving and supporting others and I am grateful for all of you!”
Dr. Jesse Van Heukelom, HRMC chief of staff, and David Dick, HRMC president and CEO, also expressed appreciation for the commitment of nurses and the integral role they play in the work of the hospital.
Sandie Hathaway, RN, who has worked at HRMC for more than 41 years and currently works as a surgery nurse, was recognized as the 2019 Nurse of the Year. She was nominated for the award by her peers and according to the nomination form, “Sandie is knowledgeable, approachable, compassionate, positive and professional in all aspects. She also has strong clinical skills with sharp attention to detail, is action-oriented and possesses superb critical thinking skills – plus, she is always willing to help by staying late, making sure her coworkers get a break or covering a need on a call shift at the last minute.”
In addition to Nurse of the Year, several nurses were honored as Nurse Heroes based on their devotion and dedication to safe patient care and helpfulness to other staff.
HRMC will celebrate National Hospital Week May 12 through May 19 with a breakfast and picnic lunch served by leadership and a scavenger-hunt like contest Bingo for Huron Bucks activities.
