HRMC Nurses Celebrated at Nurses' Day Event
May 14, 2017
Huron, S.D. – Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC) celebrated National Nurses’ Day on May 9, with a variety of relaxing activities reflecting this year’s national theme: “Nurses: The Balance of Mind, Body and Spirit.”
Attendees were treated to chair massages, chair yoga, a healthy vegetable and fruit buffet and coffee bar. They also learned about the power of a healing touch in relieving stress and caring for patients. Phyllis Jones and Sue Wollman, registered nurses with 81 combined years of service at HRMC, shared some stories of their nursing careers. Both nurses shared that they only intended to stay one year in Huron, but due to a nursing shortage in the 70s and 80s, they were encouraged to stay. Jones reminisced about her resistance to using computers for charting at first – later, she didn’t know how she could have done the job before computers. Wollman talked about the strong family bond among nursing staff and thanked all the nurses in attendance for the wonderful ride.
Gail Robeson, RN, MBA, vice president of patient services, thanked and praised HRMC’s nursing team. ”Nursing is hard – more than just a job, it involves a lot of heart and soul,” Robeson said. “Nurses are a special breed of people – it’s all about heart, and at HRMC, our nurses have a whole lot of heart!”
Jill Taylor, RN, who has worked as a nurse at HRMC for more than nine years and currently works as a nursing supervisor, was recognized as the 2017 Nurse of the Year. She was nominated for the award by her peers and according to the nomination form, “Jill provides care and education to not only patients, but to staff members as well. New staff are not afraid to ask her questions or seek advice from Jill.”
Nursing staff have also made the following comments about this year’s award winner, “Jill wears many hats and you will see her working both day and night shift almost anywhere in the hospital. She makes staff members feel like they are part of a team and is a good listener.”
