HRMC Promotes Awareness Activities for Breast Cancer Month
October 17, 2015
Huron, S.D. – October is Breast Cancer Prevention and Awareness month. In order to promote the importance of early detection activities, Huron Regional Medical Center is hosting and participating in several awareness activities.
To help personalize the importance of early detection to improve survival, HRMC asked three local survivors to share their cancer journeys in a short video presentation designed to compel viewers to care for their own health and engage in early detection activities. In “Beyond Breast Cancer,” Holly Hohm, Mickie Scheibe and Julie LaBrie recount their diagnosis, treatment and lessons learned after being diagnosed with breast cancer. The video was presented at the SD Women’s Expo and General Surgeon Dr. Cy Haatvedt, followed the video with information about breast cancer detection and treatment. The video can be viewed on HRMC’s YouTube channel or online at www.huronregional.org/no-excuses.
HRMC is also partnering with the Huron Tigers volleyball team this year to host a “Pink Out” on Tuesday, October 20, at 7 p.m., at the game against Pierre. HRMC and volleyball players are selling gray t-shirts with a pink imprint “We Can, We Will Fight: Toughness” for $15 with the goal of turning the Arena pink for the evening. T-shirts orders can be placed with any HHS volleyball player or at the Nordby Center and are due October 11. Proceeds will benefit HRMC’s breast cancer awareness fund.
Again this year, Runnings Farm & Fleet is hosting a Ladies’ Night Out on Wednesday, October 21, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. HRMC mammography staff will be on-hand providing early detection information and scheduling mammograms. Shoppers can purchase a tote bag for $2, to receive 15 percent off the regular price items they could fit into the bucket, plus enjoy food tastings and register for prizes. The “Beyond Breast Cancer” video will also be presented. A portion of the proceeds will benefit HRMC’s breast cancer awareness fund.
Throughout the month of October, HRMC is once again offering a “No Excuses Mammos” program.by distributing $50 off digital mammography coupons to women over 40 who have never had a mammogram or who haven’t had one in two years. All women can receive a $10 off mammography coupon and play a game to win a pink prize.
Flexible scheduling is also being offered throughout the month of October to remove the “no time” excuse women sometimes have for not having mammograms. Women can also bring a friend along if they are nervous about having the test. By creating an enjoyable, supportive environment and harnessing the power of the women in their life, this program aims to remove the "excuses" and improve the chance for early detection. For more information on the program or to schedule a digital mammogram, call 353-6246 or visit www.huronregional.org/no-excuses.
