HRMC Receives $10,000 Grant for Respiratory Therapist Apprenticeship

Huron, S.D. – Huron Regional Medical Center recently received a grant award to develop an apprenticeship in respiratory therapy, according to Brooke Sydow, EdD, program manager for HRMC.
The $10,000 grant was a part of the $370,000 in incentive funding awarded last month by the Department of Labor and Regulation (DLR) to help businesses expand the number of Registered Apprenticeships in South Dakota.
“Registered Apprenticeships are a great way for businesses to build a quality workforce with the exact skills they need to fill their openings,” said state DLR Secretary Marcia Hultman. “We have a pool of untapped workers ready to learn new skills, and this will expand training opportunities, especially in rural communities.”
“I am thrilled to be able to add another apprenticeship program here at HRMC to help ensure the future of respiratory care for patients in the region,” said Sydow.
In 2018, HRMC received $ 40,000 to develop a pre-apprenticeship for limited-English proficient individuals and a registered apprenticeship in nursing.
Apprenticeship programs are a great way to give our employees, and potential employees, an extra incentive to pursue high-need areas within healthcare, said Sydow. “This new grant opportunity comes at a perfect time for HRMC due to future planned retirement of respiratory staff.”
The South Dakota DLR was recently awarded a $1.2 million State Apprenticeship Expansion Grant from the U.S. Department of Labor. HRMC was one of 20 recipients awarded funds in this latest grant cycle. Programs designed to increase engagement for under-represented populations such as females, Native Americans, limited-English proficient individuals and youth ages 16 to 24 and individuals with disabilities were given priority.
“We are excited to provide these opportunities for our unique population and rural community members that may not normally be able to leave our community to gain further education” explained Sydow.
