HRMC Surgical Department Expansion Planned
March 17, 2025
Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC) board of directors recently approved a major expansion and renovation of the hospital’s surgery department aimed at enhancing the surgical experience for patients in the region.
Starting in May, construction will begin on four new operating rooms, adding over 5,000 square feet of space to the existing same-day surgery parking area. This expansion will accommodate state-of-the-art surgical equipment and technology, allowing for optimized patient care and future advancements in medical procedures.
Subsequent phases will involve relocating the endoscopy suites to the current operating room location and adding minor procedure and consultation rooms. A new central sterilization department will also be part of the renovation. The final phase, scheduled for completion in late 2026, will modernize the post-anesthesia care unit, as well as the patient preparation and recovery rooms, creating a more comfortable and efficient healing environment.
“We’re thrilled to have welcomed new surgeons to our team in the recent past, which has increased the demand for advanced technology and equipment for specialty surgeries right here in Huron,” said Pam Shoultz, RN, director of surgical services at HRMC. “We’re committed to ensuring our spaces match the exceptional care we provide.”
The surgery renovation is the first step in a master facilities plan to renovate and update physical spaces at HRMC, which will take time and resources. Erick Larson, HRMC president and CEO, shared his enthusiasm for the project, “Investing in key services for our community is a priority. By improving our facilities, we can continue offering safe, high-quality care, close to home.”
HRMC will celebrate the expansion with an open house and Chamber Mixer, hosted in partnership with the Huron Chamber and Visitors Bureau. The event will take place on Tuesday, May 13, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. in the hospital's main lobby, featuring refreshments, tours and door prizes.
