Kohnen Promoted to Patient Experience Coordinator
September 25, 2015
Huron, S.D. – Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC) is pleased to announce the promotion of Liz Kohnen, RN, to patient experience coordinator, according to Gail Robeson, RN, MBA, vice president of patient services for HRMC.
Kohnen has worked as a nurse at HRMC for more than four years. In her new role, Kohnen is responsible for leading a team of professionals focused on supporting organizational-wide programs, initiatives, projects and interventions that ensure the patient and guest experience is seamless and exceptional. Her primary responsibilities include coordinating scheduling to maintain staffing levels to provide quality care based on patient needs. Kohnen also serves as a patient advocate and assists with hands-on clinical care when needed.
“I am pleased to welcome Liz to this role of patient experience coordinator,” said Robeson. “Her past experience working as a nurse in various healthcare settings has given her valuable experience to lead our efforts in providing patient-centered care.”
The patient experience coordinator is a relatively new role at HRMC replacing the patient care coordinator job position. “Our focus at HRMC is to care for the whole person and that includes more than just their physical health,” explained Robeson. “We have redesigned the job descriptions so that there is a staff member on our medical floor and also in our maternity unit focused on the development of comprehensive nursing care for patients from the time they are admitted until after they go home.”
Kohnen is a graduate of the licensed practical nursing (LPN) program at Lake Area Technical Institute in Watertown, S.D. She also holds an associate degree in nursing from the University of South Dakota at Vermillion and is currently pursuing a bachelor of science through Dakota Wesleyan University online.
Prior to joining HRMC, Kohnen worked as a nurse at Eastern Star Home and the South Dakota Developmental Center in Redfield. She also worked at DeSmet Memorial Hospital. Since joining HRMC, Kohnen has worked as a nurse and supervisor in the medical, maternity and outpatient treatment units.
Nursing careers run in Kohnen’s family as two of her family members work at HRMC: her mother Cindy Thomas works as a nurse in cardiac rehab and her aunt Mary Binger is a nurse in the maternity unit.
“I am so excited to take this next step in my nursing journey,” said Liz. “I love caring for patients and look forward to working with my team create the best possible experiences for our patients and their families.”
Kohnen lives with her husband, Travis, on the family farm near Hitchcock. They have three sons: Kyle, a freshman at Mitchell Technical Institute; Kole, a sophomore, and Kord,, a 7th grader, at Hitchcock-Tulare High School. In her spare time, Kohnen enjoys reading, snowmobiling and camping.
