New Nursing Program in Huron Announced

HURON, SD – Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC) Foundation is pleased to announce the addition of a second nursing education program at Huron Community Campus (HCC) thanks to an innovative partnership with Southeast Technical Institute, HCC, the Huron Nursing Taskforce, and several donors and foundations in the region, according to Paul Rann, CFRE, executive director for the HRMC Foundation.
Southeast Tech will expand their satellite nursing education program in Huron by adding a practical nursing diploma with classes scheduled to begin January 2020.
“This new program follows the successful launch of a registered nurse program at HCC in Fall 2018 and is in direct response to our community’s needs,” said Brooke Sydow, EdD, HRMC program developer. “Area residents have expressed their desire to be able to begin and end a nursing program right here in Huron. By creating these two nursing education opportunities, we are able to remove many barriers for students in our area.”
“We are pleased to expand nursing education at our Huron site as part of our goal to make technical education affordable, accessible and attainable,” said Robert Griggs, Southeast Tech president. “The response to our RN program has exceeded our expectations, and we look forward to preparing even more nurses.”
Area residents who have a high school education and have completed the necessary prerequisites and entrance testing are eligible for the practical nursing program. Classes will be delivered face-to-face at HCC during daytime hours with clinicals at local healthcare facilities.

“We are excited to add this practical nursing program to our Huron site to help ensure a continued supply of nurses to care for the communities in the region,” explained Kristin Possehl, RN, MSN, MEd, Southeast Tech dean of nursing. “What’s new about this program is that any person interested in a nursing career can complete their nursing education right here close to home and be ready to enter the healthcare workforce.”
The practical nursing program is a total of 48 credits, which includes required prerequisites. Upon successful completion, students will be eligible to sit for the licensed practical nurse exam and begin working.
“Nursing is a fantastic and rewarding profession,” said David Dick, president and CEO for Huron Regional Medical Center. “Since 1944 Huron has provided nursing education locally, and I am so grateful to be able to help continue that tradition. Having both the practical and registered nursing programs available here in Huron gives rural citizens in this region the opportunity to have their dream of working in health care come true.”
“Through our Healthy Huron initiative, HRMC Foundation invests in people by providing students with scholarships and education opportunities,” said Rann. “This nursing education program and financial support for the students would not be possible if not for the dedication of many partners and donors.”
Currently,10 area students have applied for the LPN program. Interested students will need to complete several prerequisites (18-21 credits) and entrance testing before starting the program in January.
