Huron, S.D. – Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC) honored employees for nearly 900 years of combined service in addition to two employees for exceptional customer service skills at the hospital’s Employee Awards Presentation on Friday, January 4, 2019, at the Huron Event Center.
During the evening event, 48 employees were recognized for sharing their hearts and years of service, ranging from 5 to 40 years, with hospital patients. Employees and their family members enjoyed a meal while celebrating the 895 years of combined service represented by those being honored.
In addition to the service awards, HRMC recognized two employees with special awards. Barb Reilly, who has worked as a housekeeper at HRMC for nearly 11 years, was selected by coworkers to be the 2018 Exceptional Employee of the Year from the 12 monthly exceptional employee candidates.
According to coworkers, “Barb is kind, cheerful and positive; a pleasure to be around. She enjoys her job; making sure each patient feels welcome and has the best possible first impression,” the nomination forms continued. “Her smile makes me smile; I love to have her working in my area.”
Prior to joining the HRMC team, Reilly worked at Sunquest Village in Huron. She and her husband, Dale, farm south of Iroquois. They have three grown children and six grandchildren. In her spare time, Reilly enjoys helping Dale on the farm, reading and visiting her family.
Gerri Carpenter, who works as a registered respiratory therapist at HRMC, received the 2018 Mickey Mouse Award. The Mickey Mouse Award began in 1989 in memory of Dr. David Buchanan whose uplifting personality and contagious smile were an inspiration to all that knew him. Each year, an HRMC employee who is dedicated to making people feel better in whatever they do is selected by their coworkers.
According to her coworkers, “Gerri is a kind soul who steps up to help all over the hospital spreading joy over and over again. She is an all-around happy, caring and considerate person and a great teacher who often says with a smile, ‘I will help.’”
Carpenter walked through HRMC’s doors a little over a year ago with a warm heart and a jubilant attitude. “Every day since that first day, she’s continued to shower both patients and coworkers with that same spirit,” according to coworkers.
Carpenter earned an associate of science in respiratory care from Washburn University in Topeka, KS. Prior to joining HRMC, she worked as a respiratory therapist at Avera St. Mary’s in Pierre for 25 years. She lives in Onida with her husband Bruce, who is a farmer. In her spare time, Carpenter enjoys serving on the Sully County fair board; is active in her church and passionate about all things 4-H.
