The annual Runnings’ Ladies Night Out was back this year on October 20, after a year-off during the pandemic, with the local store raising $2,200 to help support breast cancer awareness and early detection during the month of October.
This year’s fundraising included a portion of the orange bucket sales, an employee-sponsored raffle and sales of pink ribbons for $1 each. The effort is led by Laura Snowden of Runnings and was supported by staff selling ribbons, gathering items for the raffle and selling raffle tickets the night of the event.
“It was great to be able to host the in-person Ladies Night again this year. We all really love and look forward to this event,” said Shane Hood, store manager. “I’m grateful for our employees who prepare for the event, dress up the night of, sell raffle tickets and encourage shoppers to purchase pink ribbons to honor a loved one touched by breast cancer.”
HRMC staff were on-hand again this year, promoting early detection and scheduling mammograms. This year’s funds bring the total raised by the Huron-based Runnings’ store to more than $17,000 in over 10 years of hosting the event. As a company, Runnings has raised over $100,000 since the event first started in 2010. The contributions are placed in the HRMC Foundation We’ve Got You Covered breast cancer fund which will help offset the purchase of new, state-of-the-art 3D mammography for Huron Regional Medical Center.
Nearly $20,000 was raised for 3D mammography this year during the October events. In addition to the Runnings event, the Prostrollo 1-mile Walk raised $4,600 and nearly $6,000 was raised by the Huron Volleyball team through t-shirt sales and online auction. Additionally, the Golfing for a Cause tournament in August, Cookie Dough Cupcakes pink ribbon cupcake sales, and the Huron Police Department Jeans Day fundraiser raised nearly $6,500.
“When we decided to earmark this year’s breast cancer awareness funds to offset the hospital’s cost of purchasing new 3D mammography, I knew the community would be excited and respond,” explained Shawn Martin, HRMC Foundation executive director. “I’m overwhelmed with the response and am proud to be a part of supporting this technology to catch cancers earlier and help in the fight against the devastating effects of breast cancer in our community.”
