Runnings Raises $2,769 to Fight Breast Cancer
January 04, 2021
Despite the annual Runnings’ Ladies Night Out event being cancelled due to the pandemic, the Huron team raised $2,769 to help support breast cancer awareness and early detection during the month of October.
This year’s fundraising took the form of several online “bucket auctions” in addition to sales of pink ribbons for $1 each. The effort is led by Laura Snowden of Runnings and was supported by staff selling ribbons and gathering items for the bucket auctions from vendors and local businesses.
“Even though it was unsafe to host a large gathering like we’ve done in the past, my staff was passionate about raising funds for this important cause,” said Shane Hood, store manager. “I’m grateful for our employees who coordinated the silent auction donations and encouraged shoppers to purchase pink ribbons to honor a loved one touched by breast cancer.”
This year’s funds bring the total raised by Runnings’ efforts over the last 10 years to nearly $15,000. The contributions are placed in the HRMC Foundation We’ve Got You Covered breast cancer fund to provide free mammograms to women in need.
“I’m so grateful for everyone who stepped up to continue the fundraising – even without an event,” explained Shawn Martin, HRMC Foundation executive director. “COVID-19 has impacted our ability to raise funds – but the need has not gone away. Breast cancer still impacts one in eight women and these funds help us to provide no-cost mammograms to women in need.”
Area women concerned about finances when scheduling a mammogram are invited to call 605-353-6214 or can apply for financial assistance online at www.huronregional.org/mammos. All inquiries are kept confidential.
