We all have a story, cancer survivors, their friends, family and those who are battling the disease wtih regular screenings.

The key to prevention of breast cancer is regular breast exams and mammograms. Our experienced and professional team offers 3D Mammography, right here in Huron.

Mammography at HRMC

HRMC offers full-field 3D mammography – a powerful tool in the detection and fight against breast cancer. Multiple images are taken of the breast from different angles, which is more accurate and causes fewer false positives.

Key benefits of 3D mammography are improved accuracy, low radiation similar to a regular 2D mammogram, quicker exam time and a more comfortable patient experience. HRMC's 3D mammography system, the GE Senographe Pristina, is fast – yet ultra-sensitive. Currently, mammography is the best way to detect cancer when no symptoms exist.

HRMC’s 3D mammography system also includes a 3D biopsy platform. Within 15 minutes, the technologist can have the biopsy platform set up so a physician can locate the concerning area and perform the biopsy right in the mammography suite.

How should I prepare for a mammogram?

IMPORTANT! – On the day of your mammogram, be sure not to apply underarm deodorant/antiperspirant as it can interfere with the imaging process.
You will be asked to change into a gown, so wear clothing that can be easily removed. It may be easier to wear a shirt with a skirt or pants, so you only need to remove your shirt and bra.
By not scheduling your mammogram immediately before or during your period, your breasts may not be as tender or swollen, which will help reduce discomfort and also allow for a clearer picture.
If this is the first time you’ve had a mammogram at HRMC, bring a list of the places you’ve been before and dates of previous mammograms, biopsies or any other breast procedures.

What should I expect during this exam?

The mammogram will take approximately 20 minutes. However, if additional images are needed, it may take a little longer.

A female technologist will position your breasts between two plastic plates. The plates will compress your breast for a few seconds.
You may feel some discomfort or pain during the compression. Try to relax. If you are in pain, be sure to tell the technologist so she can try to adjust the position of your breast.

What will happen after the exam?

After the test, you may have to wait briefly while the technologist ensures the images are clear.
You should be able to return to normal activities right away.
Your health care provider will contact you with your test results.

Avoiding Screenings Due to Cost? We've Got You Covered

Huron Regional Medical Center is pleased to offer “We’ve Got You Covered,” a program to increase the number of women receiving regular mammograms and women's cancer screenings through awareness activities and free screenings. The best protection against breast and reproductive cancer is to know your risk and practice early-detection activities like self-breast exams, regular mammograms, annual pelvic and clinic breast exams and regular pap screenings.

Thanks to the generousity of HRMC Foundation donors, HRMC has extended the offer of FREE mammograms and womens cancer screenings to women in need:

who are at the recommended age for screening or at higher risk for cancer. For mammograms, it is recommended to begin screenings at age 40.
who have not had a mammogram or womens health exam in one year, and
who do not have insurance/insurance does not cover
