    After You Go Home

Taking your new baby home is one of the happiest times in a woman's life. But it also presents both physical and emotional challenges.

    • Get as much rest as possible. You may find that all you can do is eat, sleep, and care for your baby, and that is perfectly okay.
    • You will have spotting or bleeding, like a menstrual period, off and on for up to six weeks.
    • You might also have swelling in your legs and feet, feel constipated, or have menstrual-like cramping.
    • Even if you are not breastfeeding, you can have milk leaking from your nipples, and your breasts might feel full, tender, or uncomfortable.
    • Follow your doctor's instructions on how much activity, like climbing stairs or walking, you can do for the next few weeks.
    • Doctors usually recommend that you abstain from sexual intercourse for four to six weeks after birth.

In addition to physical changes, you may feel sad or have the "baby blues”. If you are extremely sad or are unable to care for yourself or your baby, you might have a serious condition called postpartum depression.

For more information, visit post-pregnancy health.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What do I do when labor starts?
    • If able, call (605) 353-6251 to speak with a labor and delivery nurse.
    • Come to HRMC and check in at admissions (regular business hours) or the switchboard by the emergency entrance.
What is your policy on photography and videotaping?

The use of videotaping and still photography during delivery is not allowed, but may be used after delivery. Upon your consent, you will receive a commemorative photo of your newborn and will have the opportunity to post him/her in our Web Nursery and social media channels.

How long will I be at the hospital?

The length of your stay will depend on what kind of delivery you have. Your obstetrician will help make the best decision based on your condition. On average, a vaginal delivery hospital stay is 30 to 48 hours, with a cesarean section being 48 to 96 hours.

What kind of food can I expect?

Wholesome, nourishing and well-balanced meals are an important part of your treatment and recovery. Support trays throughout labor and after are available by request. You will receive a menu each day that allows you to create meals within your prescribed dietary guidelines. Special diets will be made on request. If able, please notify HRMC ahead of time. HRMC also offers a variety of healthy snack options for patients who are hungry outside of meal times. Snack menus are located in patient rooms. Simply choose your snack and contact a staff member to order.

What should I bring to hospital?

    For the expectant mother:

    • Comfortable clothes (especially to go home in)
      • HRMC provides robes and gowns, mesh panties and pads
    • Nursing bra or sports bra
    • Nursing pads
    • Music playlist (Bluetooth available in rooms and tubs)
    • Baby book, so staff can place hand/foot prints for you
    • Special snacks
    • Camera or equipment to take photos

    For the support person:

    • Change of clothing/sleep wear
    • Toiletries
    • Pillow

    For the baby:

    • Outfit to go home in
    • Approved infant car seat

Diapers, wipes, soap, lotion, thermometer (courtesy of HRMC's Auxiliary) and diaper bag are provided during your stay. Our nursery is stocked with modern gowns for baby while staying with us. We also provide muslin swaddle blankets.

    Visiting Hours

We know you are excited to show off your new bundle of joy, and visits are an important part of healing. Family and friends may visit at the hours of your choosing, as long as it does not infringe on the rights of other patients. Visitors should check in at the nurse’s station before entering a room. All children must be supervised by an adult.

HRMC's quiet time is from 1:30-3:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m-5:00 a.m. every day. We ask visitors to please:

    • Speak softly and turn cell phones to vibrate.
    • Know lights will be dimmed on units and in patient rooms.
    • Accompany children under the age of 14 by an adult age 18 and over; do not leave children unattended in the patient room or waiting room at any time.
    • Not use disruptive or aggressive behavior.

This is a time of peace and quiet for our patients. Thank you for helping us to provide a restful environment.

Where can I get a birth certificate?

Birth certificates can be obtained from the Beadle County Register of Deeds or from the SD Department of Health in Pierre. HRMC does provide a commemorative birth certificate with your newborn’s footprints that is perfect for his/her baby book.
