You've Decided to Have Orthopedic Surgery and Are Worried About The Pain

Video Transcript

Dr. Todd Anderson: The changes in pain management  have been huge in the last 10 years or so. One of the biggest things that have that has come along are nerve blocks and we utilize those a lot in orthopedic surgery in conjunction with general anesthesia and what that does is it'll it'll numb up the surgical site for 12 to 24 hours and allows the patient to recover from the surgery, wake up, get to their hospital bed or get home.

They're set up with their pain medication, they've got ice on their shoulder their knee or whatever and then the anesthesia starts to wear off, but by then a couple of things have happened. They made the transition to their recovery area, they've got pain medication on board and most importantly they've kind of made that psychological taking that psychological step in the right direction as far as rehab is concerned by saying to themselves, "well you know what this isn't so bad, this isn't as bad as i thought it was going to be".

You know the system and that carries all the way through in their recovery and makes a big difference in the final result.
