HURON, S.D. – Anthony Loewen, MD, general surgeon, has joined the Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC) medical staff, according to Erick Larson, president and CEO for HRMC.
Dr. Anthony Loewen
General Surgeon, New Life Clinic
Dr. Loewen provides general surgery care for patients of all ages, including advanced laparoscopic surgery, colorectal surgery, endocrine surgery, breast and skin cancer surgery, thyroid and parathyroid surgery, endoscopy (colonoscopy and upper GI endoscopy), hernia management and trauma care.
“We are so grateful that Dr. Loewen has committed to return to his home community and provide surgical care to our patients,” said Larson. “His commitment to practicing health care and becoming an integral part of Huron not only benefits our hospital and patients, but also our entire community.”
As part of HRMC’s “grow your own” recruitment strategy, Dr. Loewen made the commitment to return to Huron to practice prior to entering medical school. The hospital supported him through medical school and residency. That support and medical school loans are forgiven over the next five years.
Dr. Loewen, or Tony as many know him, is no stranger to Huron or HRMC having grown up here and graduated from James Valley Christian School. He worked in HRMC’s emergency room before starting medical school at the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine where he earned his Doctor of Medicine. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in premedical biochemistry from Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas. Most recently, Dr. Loewen completed his residency at St. Joseph Hospital General Surgery in Denver, Colorado.
“I’ve always liked working with my hands and fixing things, so general surgery is a perfect match for me,” explained Dr. Loewen. “Growing up in Huron was a very positive experience for me and this is a special place. My goal all along has been to obtain the medical education and health care experience to be able to help my friends and neighbors through quality surgical care close to home.”
On August 3, the younger Dr. Loewen joined his father, Dr. Nathan Loewen, a family medicine with obstetrics physician, in the New Life Clinic (formerly, New Life Family Medicine Clinic), which is located in downtown Huron.
Dr. Loewen, his wife, Emma, and their four sons Keegan, age 11 years; Riley, age 8 years; Parker, age 3 years; and Nathan Royston, one year, recently moved to Huron. More information and details about how to make an appointment is available online at www.huronregional.org/Find-a-Doc.
